Sweet Writing! SRSD/Writer's Workshop Awesomeness!

Oh boy! Apparently I took a blogging hiatus and didn't mean to! Oops! I don't know what I've been doing, but summer is already almost over. I got my class list for the new year yesterday. That means it's real. I am so excited for my new class though! There will be lots of changes this year, but I can't wait to see what fun and surprises these changes will bring.

One reason this old blog has been put to the wayside has been this fabulous pack I'm bringing to you today. I am soooo excited about it! It was a TON of work, but I love it!

Let me tell you a bit about why I created it. This summer I was asked to go to a new training. I am going to be a Math and Literacy Trainer for our school this year. I was surprised to find out that most of the training was about writing! Hurray! I LOVE teaching writing! Even better, is that my team has really been struggling with writing. I have been hearing over and over how they would like a writing plan. Well, that day has come! We had been doing Write From the Beginning in the past and weren't in love with it. We felt it was too limiting. I struggled with that myself when I first came to this new school. I love Writer's Workshop, and WftB did not "fit" like I would like it too. Well, I am here to say that I now love SRSD even more because it melds the two programs together. It's the best of both worlds.

SRSD? What in the world is that? SRSD stands for Self-Regulated Strategy Development. Basically, all that to say it is a framework or guide to getting students to be independent writers. Here is a more formal way of expressing that. :) Self-Regulated Strategy Development is an evidence-based pedagogy that helps students improve their writing through strategy and self-regulation. It is a framework that can be used with your existing writing plan to gradually release students to independent writing.

I love it because we can tweak it with what we've been doing and what we'd like to do to make our own program. So, my training partner and I made the program work for us.

SRSD is big on mnemonics, graphic organizers, self-talk, and using texts in writing. Well, we did just that! The only problem was that we didn't love the mnemonics that came with the program. We thought they would be difficult for our 1st graders and where was the cuteness?! So, we fixed that as well. We came up with this!

P.O.W is what they gave us as a mnemonic for the writing process. We liked that and kept that, but changed the other mnemonics to fit first graders. P is for Pull Apart the Prompt or Pick a topic. O is for Organize Your Thoughts and W is for Write It Out.

Then they put that together with the different modes of writing. For example, the mnemonic we were given for Informative writing was POW+TIDE. OK, I get it, but would a first grader? What is a Tide? How does it relate to 6 year olds? The TIDE part was to help them remember the pieces or order of an informative writing piece. So what could we use to help them remember and be something they understood and could relate to? How about POW+PIE! Everyone loves pie! So we chose PIE- P for Purpose, I for Important Details, and E for Ending. All the parts you need for an informative writing piece and it's cute and easy to remember. Once we had pie, we knew we needed to stick to the"sweet" theme. So that's just what we did. We now have PIE for informative, OREO for opinion, and Smore for Narrative. I love it and know the kids will love it even more.

This is a 55 page pack full of everything you will need to introduce and teach the different modes of writing. Look at some of the cute pages!

This is a mini poster (yes, you can blow it up to a regular size poster) for the OREO or Opinion writing.

Here is another poster for Self-talk. Every writer struggles with writer's block, ideas, etc. This poster shows them how to talk themselves through it!

Here is the Graphic Organizer for the Smore/Narrative writing.

SRSD is big on giving a pre-assessment and post-assessment to make sure the kiddos are getting all the pieces. This pack includes texts that the student's can read and study to give them the information they need to write an informative piece. The source texts also do double duty because they are written as an example to them of how informative writing should look. Each text also has a prompt so the kiddos know exactly what they should be writing about. Here is an example of the Narrative prompt. For this one, I would use a picture and they would make up a story based on that picture.

SRSD emphasizes revision more than editing. Yes, we want them to have capital letters and periods, but to become good writers they need to revise and make better. This page will help them get there. They would write sentences from their graphic organizer onto this page. Then they would go back and revise to make "super-duper" sentences on the yellow line. Then they can easily copy that over to their final draft page.

I am so excited about writing this year. If you are struggling, want a change, or just want to add to your writing time, then please check this out. For those teachers in Tennessee who will be incorporating SRSD into writing, this gives you a good start.

This pack is on sale until school starts for me, so go get it now at a discounted price!

Happy writing!

Be fun and fabulous!

P.S. I plan to add a supplement pack to this with writing activities later, but this will get you started with what you already do.

P.S.S. I hope to get 2 or 3 more different packets on TpT before school starts. Be on the lookout!

So Much to Do, So Little Spring Break

How is it already the last Saturday of Spring Break?! I'm pretty sure it just started yesterday! My to-do list is still SOOOOO long! Oh well, it will all get done sometime. maybe in the summer?!

Looks like I've become a once-a-month blogger. Rats! That was not my intention. Hey! I bet I'll do really well this summer. :)

We've done so many awesome things lately, most of it spring related, even though spring wasn't in sight for so long. Thankfully, this week has finally felt like spring, just in time for Spring Break! Let's review the past month in pictures.

Dr. Seuss Week! This is one of my favorite weeks of the year! I am pretty sure I say that about most weeks, but I really, really love this week! :) We had a snow day, so that disrupted our plans a bit, but we fit in most everything. Who wouldn't love silly socks?

Exploring adjectives by eating PopRocks while wearing Dr. Seuss hats! What could be better?

Dressing up as our favorite Seuss character! Such fun! I was the Lorax, of course! Although I put together 3 different costumes. I can't wait until next year's costume.

We made Oobelek! Fun and grossness at the same time=awesome!

We also learned the r-controlled vowel, "ar" this week, so we had to take off our Seuss hats and put on our pirate patches! Can't miss going on a treasure hunt, that's for sure! Look what we found! Argh, Matey!

I also coordinated a school-wide Book Drive to celebrate Read Across America Day. I was soooo proud of the kiddos for bringing in their gently-used books. We had sooooo many books that each kiddo got to choose TWO new-to-them books, and we still had plenty to donate to a local charity. This is just one side of the cafeteria and there were more books on the other side!!

We couldn't leave Dr. Seuss week without eating green eggs and ham, of course! Yum, yum!

We also had Schlopp, schlopp, beautiful schlopp!

Then it was St. Patrick's Day! We started out by figuring out what two primary colors would make green. Was it blue and red? Nope.

How about yellow and red? Nope again!

Yellow and blue? Let's see....

Woohoo! Yellow and blue make green!

Then silly Larry the Leprechaun left us some magic leprechaun pudding. We had to make it ourselves and guess what?! There were tiny gold nuggets in the pudding. It was delicious!

Then he left a giant mess! Plus, we had all invented leprechaun traps and he was so sneaky, he didn't get caught in one of them!

Then we topped off the day with Shamrock Shakes, complete with green cherries! Scrumptious.

What says spring more than flying a kite?! We did a narrative writing about a day we flew a kite, so we had to go try it out, of course!
We also made terrariums and aquariums, complete with real live bugs and fish!

Spring is amazing and I am so glad it is finally here! Although that means that there is not too much longer with my little cuties. 2nd grade will be here before we know it!

This week was Spring Break. I can't wait to hear all about their adventures. I did get to visit with one of my favorite teacher friends from my old school. I also did my student teaching with her. She is fantastic, and I'm so glad I got to see her and her sweet kiddo. I miss my RSE friends!

Last but not least, I finished my Unit 6 Wonders Selection Tests. Now all the units are complete! I know you guys love them, so don't forget to grab them before you start unit 6.

Be fun and fabulous!

Snow Day!

We finally got a snow day with a miniscule amount of snow! Woohoo! Usually, I hate being out because all of my plans get messed up, but I wasn't really planned for this week anyway, so it worked out perfectly. They canceled early enough that I hadn't started my frantic planning. It is Dr. Seuss week though, so I am a little bummed about that. Hopefully, I can fit in all of our fun stuff. Who knows if we will be closed tomorrow, too?  Maybe some of you are out of school today, too. Check out my newest products.

Unit 5 Selection Tests for 1st Grade Wonders Reading. A comprehension test for all ten Anthology Stories. I can't believe there is only one unit left to go!

My next product is something that the lower grade teachers in my school wanted in poster form. I really liked how it turned out, and hope it is what they were looking for. I thought I'd go ahead and put it on TpT for everyone to use.

There is one in color and one in black and white. It can be blown up to poster-size, put in your Math Center or given as a student helper. My kiddos love looking at our Math Strategies and trying to pick a way that no one else does. It really helps them grasp the different ways to make numbers. This has helped our Math Tasks so much!

Enjoy your snow day!

Be fun and fabulous!

Winter Wonders!

Awwww, this winter has been so fun. Unless you count the freezing temps without any snow. That's not so fun. If it is going to be this cold, we should at least have some snow to play in, that's for sure. We have done some awesome stuff so far this year. Wanna see?

We did an experiment to see if ice melted faster in salt water or fresh water. Only 1 true prediction for this one!

We wrote our spelling words in "snow", and cleaned our desks at the same time. Woohoo!

We had our 100th day of school! Such fun! We did lots of fun activities with the number 100. Our favorite though, was to see how far 100 steps would take us! Boy, were they surprised!

Who doesn't like to celebrate with food?! We had 100 yummy snacks! Plus, it was a good math lesson!

We measured, measured, measured. I think every single thing in the classroom got measured at least once. We even measured ourselves with snowballs. I actually felt tall for once doing this activity. :)

We had our own Winter Olympics. We got to throw snowballs (marshmallows) in our events. We did a relay, shot put, and a toss. We got to measure our distances and even got to stand on a podium if ours went the furthest distance. It was freezing, but they loved it!

We talked about Dental Health last week. Fun, fun! We did some neat experiments, that really got the kids thinking about taking care of their teeth! Here's a cavity in our tooth. I forgot the picture at the end of the week, but I'll just say YUCK! The kids were very grossed out, which is a good thing. I bet there was more teeth brushing last week than any other this school year. :)
Here is our teeth in various liquids. We wanted to see what would happen when we drink sugary liquids.

This is Dr. Pepper. DISGUSTING! There was even a sticky residue left on the egg, so we talked about how we need to limit our soda consumption, but when we do drink it, we need to brush our teeth afterwards, because that sticky stuff will invite cavities for sure.
This is kool-aid. Who wants green teeth?!
Ahhh! Water, fresh, clean water! Much better for our teeth, as you can see.

We did so many fun things. They didn't even realize how much learning went on. We also had a snowball fight in our classroom with real and nonsense words. Now that was exciting!  This last half of the year is so fun. I can't wait for all of the fun stuff coming up soon.

Now for your last treat, my newest product! It's such a fabulous way of telling someone Happy Birthday! You can use it in your class for the birthday child. The class can write them a special note about them. You can use it for teacher assistants, room parents, other teachers, and even principals. We did this for our Principal on his birthday a couple weeks ago. They LOVED writing their favorite things about him. They wrote about what he did in the school, what they thought he did in his office, what he did at home, etc. Their responses were funny. I loved reading them, and I am sure he did, too. At least he better have! ;) Check it out if you have a special birthday coming up in your classroom!

Finally, here is my Valentine gift to the class. Who needs more candy or cards to throw away.
Hot chocolate! Cheap, easy, and they love it!

Be fun and fabulous!
